My wife fell in May, incurring compression fractures of three vertebrae in the lower back. Through three months of confinement to bed, she required prescription painkillers. Within two days of using the Platinum Back Support, her back was pain free and she no longer required painkillers. Joseph Fort Worth, TX
I have fibromyalgia and there's not a part of my body that doesn't hurt. I sleep with a Magnetic Therapy Pillow between my knees, and I absolutely love the Magnetic Travel Pillow The relief I get when traveling in my car is great. Thank you so much. Judy Southampton, PA

Magnet Therapy What is magnet therapy?Magnet therapy is a safe, non-invasive method of applying magnetic fields to the body for therapeutic purposes. It is recommended for the relief of joint and muscle pain, inflammation and stiffness. It helps to speed the healing process and improve quality of sleep without adverse side effects. Magnetic therapy can be very effective and is an excellent choice for many people. Over the centuries it has been well documented that many cultures, including the Chinese, ancient Greeks and Egyptians, have used magnets to relieve pain and other symptoms. However, the size and weight of magnets available at that time, made them difficult to use. In the later part of the 20th century, smaller and stronger magnetic materials became available which lead to the development of modern day magnet therapy products. Back to top What about gauss?Gauss is a measurement of magnetic energy, but alone is not an indication of the strength of a magnet. The manufacture’s gauss rating is the maximum amount of magnetic energy that a magnet can hold at its core. Different magnetic materials hold different amounts of magnetic energy so they will have different gauss ratings. In addition, gauss ratings are not cumulative. In other words if a magnet therapy product contains ten magnets, each with a manufacturer’s gauss rating of 4,000, the product is still 4,000 gauss, not 40,000 gauss. Back to top What determines the effectiveness of a magnet therapy product? To be therapeutically effective, a magnet therapy product must produce a strong magnetic field that penetrates much deeper than the injured area. A larger diameter and thicker magnet will produce a stronger, deeper penetrating magnetic field than a smaller, thinner magnet of the same gauss rating. The gauss rating of the magnet, the size (diameter and thickness) of each magnet, and the spacing of the magnets are what determine the strength and uniformity of the magnetic field, and ultimately the effectiveness of the product. Back to top Are there differences in quality between magnet therapy products?Yes, there are significant differences in quality. Many companies use magnets that are either too small or too thin to provide any real benefit. In addition, many products are manufactured with their magnets facing the wrong way (the wrong polarity facing the body), which can increase, rather than ease discomfort. The cushioning and support materials are equally as important. If magnet therapy product is not worn enough because it is uncomfortable, you will not get the full benefit. Therion has developed engineering processes that ensure proper polarity and optimum magnetic field strength and penetration. We use only the most comfortable cushioning and support materials so you can rest assured that you will get maximum therapeutic benefits. Back to top How does magnet therapy work?We know that the body produces small electromagnetic fields by the movement of charged particles called ions (e.g. calcium, potassium, sodium etc.). The movement of these ions controls all of our physical and mental functions and maintains a delicate electromagnetic balance within our bodies. Pain and swelling are the result of an electromagnetic field imbalance due to a change in the ion concentrations at the injury area. The application of magnet therapy to an injured area relaxes the capillary walls and the surrounding muscle and connective tissue to increase blood flow. The increased blood flow supplies more oxygen and nutrients to the injured area, restoring normal ion concentrations, relieving pain and swelling, and promoting rapid healing. Back to top How widely used is magnet therapy?Magnet therapy is used by over 150 million people worldwide. Clinical studies in the U.S., Japan and Europe have shown magnet therapy to be a safe, effective method of relieving pain and promoting healing. Many eastern European countries, as well as Japan, use magnet therapy extensively and continue to find that it provides tremendous benefits for a wide range of conditions. Magnet therapy is also effective as a preventative measure, helping to protect injury-prone areas such as the lower back and knees during physical activity. Back to top Is magnetic therapy safe? The World Health Organization has stated the magnet therapy is safe and has no known health risks. Magnet therapy should not be used by anyone wearing a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump or any other implanted electro-medical device, and should not be used if you are pregnant. Have there been clinical studies on the effectiveness of magnetic therapy?Contrary to what you read in articles written by some M.D.'s, there are over 300 peer reviewed clinical studies and many articles on the effectiveness of magnet therapy for a wide range of conditions. While there are some M.D.'s with a good working knowledge of magnet therapy, it is unfortunate that others choose to use their medical credentials to influence consumers on a subject for which they have no training and little knowledge. Many European countries, as well as Japan, use magnetic therapy extensively and continue to find that it provides tremendous benefits for a wide range of conditions. Physicians in the United States using magnetic therapy in their practices have reported numerous case histories showing the positive benefits for their patients as well. Back to top How do I select a magnetic mattress pad?A magnetic mattress pad can help reduce and/or eliminate symptoms ranging from mild insomnia or restlessness, to simple muscle aches and pains, to fibromyalgia and arthritis. There are several criteria to look for when selecting a magnetic mattress pad to ensure you will get the desired therapeutic benefits. The ideal magnetic mattress product is one that combines a therapeutically effective magnetic field with the long lasting comfort and support of high quality cushioning components that are specifically matched to a person’s needs. 1. Magnets - Many magnetic mattress pads on the market use magnets that are either too small or too few to produce beneficial effects. In addition, only the north pole of the magnets should face the body in a mattress pad. High quality magnetic mattress pads must contain a large number of magnets that are of the right size, thickness and strength to generate a therapeutically effective magnetic field. Beware of magnetic mattress pads that only provide the number of magnets contained in the pad and their strength. Many are using very thin magnets and stacking two together so they can advertise a large number of magnets. In reality one single magnet that is ¼" thick is stronger and more effective than two 1/8" thick magnets stacked together. When magnets are stacked together in a mattress pad they will shift due and flip causing the south-pole to face the body, which can cause your discomfort to become worse and create a health risk. 2. Comfort and Durability are important considerations - Typical constructions range from no padding on the low end, to premium viscoelastic (memory) foam out of which the most comfortable magnetic mattress pads are made. Be careful when you see the term hospital grade foam used to indicate the quality of their foam mattress pads. Have you ever slept on a hospital bed? This is intended to create an image of high quality and comfort, but in fact, is not the case. It can be a very expensive mistake to buy a magnetic mattress pad that is not comfortable and will not last. Back to top How do I select a magnetic orthopedic support? The magnets must be the proper polarity, size, thickness and strength to produce the proper therapeutic effect. The support material must provide the proper amount of support and compression to the affected area and must be comfortable to wear for a long enough period of time to provide therapeutic benefits. For example, a standard neoprene support can only be worn for an hour or two at a time due to excessive heat and perspiration build-up between the skin and the support. If it is worn too long tissue breakdown can occur. Supports made with breathable fabrics eliminate the problem of excess heat and perspiration build-up, but allow air to escape rapidly, decreasing skin temperature and preventing a therapeutic increase in blood flow. As a result, the only benefit of breathable fabrics is limited compressive support. An ideal biomagnetic support will provide multiple therapeutic benefits by combining the correct magnets with a support material that provides therapeutic benefits and has excellent wearability. Therion uses a patented thermal regulating support material, which is the only material known to allow air to pass through at a controlled rate, keeping your skin free of perspiration, while maintaining ideal skin temperature over an extended period of time. Therion MTR™ supports ensure that body heat, blood flow, and compression remain consistent during a wide range of activities and climate conditions. Therion MTR orthopedic supports are designed to address any level of pain using larger, high-energy magnets to ensure that a strong, uniform magnetic field surrounds the injured area. Back to top
